Gun attacks claim nine more lives

Karachi: Another nine people, including a police head constable and activists of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and the Awami National Party (ANP), fell victim to gun attacks in the city on Thursday.
The deaths brought to 31 the number of people who have been killed in political and sectarian attacks across the metropolis over the past three days. Ten had died a day earlier, while 13 had been killed on Tuesday.
Policeman shot dead
Head Constable Muhammad Nazer, 55, was on a patrol in a mobile van on the Supre Highway when two men riding a motorcycle opened fire at the van near the Al-Asif Square police kiosk and escaped. Nazer died on the spot. His body was taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital (ASH) for a postmortem. A medico-legal officer (MLO) at the hospital said the victim had suffered eight bullet wounds.
The Sohrab Goth SHO said a 9MM pistol was used in the attack. He said Nazer was posted at the Sohrab Goth police station. The SHO said the victim lived in Gulshan View Apartments and left behind two widows.
Attacks on policemen are increasing in the city, and Nazer was the 103rd policeman to have been killed this year.
Man, nephew killed
Nisar Mehdi, 30, and his nephew, Najam Abbasi, 28, died when four men on two motorcycles sprayed them with bullets from automatic weapons in Orangi Town No-4 in the Peerabad police remit.
The two were on their motorcycle when they were attacked near the Mominabad police station. The assailants escaped after the attack, leaving them in a pool of blood.
Police came out of the police station after hearing the gunshots and took the bodies to the ASH for legal formalities. An MLO said both men had suffered five bullet wounds each to upper parts of their bodies. Police said 9MM pistols had been used by the criminals. The SHO Peerabad said the victims were employees of a textile mills and lived in Peerabad.
ANP worker slain
Nadir, 25, and Furkhan suffered injuries when two men riding a motorcycle opened fire on them at a tea stall at night near the Blees Arcade in the Sachal police remit. The injured were rushed to a private hospital in a critical condition, where Nadir breathed his last during treatment.
The Sachal SHO said Nadir and Furkhan were activists of the Awami National Party (ANP) and lived in Jauhar Complex.
Man killed in Taser Town
Zahid Shah, 35, was shot dead by two men on a motorcycle in the Surjani Town police jurisdiction.
Police said the assailants intercepted him near the Rangers Headquarters in Taser Town, and opened fire on him before fleeing. The body of the victim was carried to the ASH for medico-legal formalities.
Businessman killed
Baadshah Khan, 35, a businessman, was shot dead near Rasheedabad in the SITE-B police limits. Police said that when Khan slowed his car near a road hump, a man came close to the car and shot him thrice.
A police sleuth said police were investigating if the businessman had been receiving extortion threats.
Two MQM activists killed
Naseem, 30, was gunned down near Gulshan-e-Bahair in Orangi Town No-16.
Pakistan Bazaar police said Naseem was sitting outside his home when two gunmen on a motorcycle shot him and escaped.
After hearing the gunshots, residents of the area came out of their homes and took his body to the ASH for a postmortem. An MLO at the health facility said that the victim had suffered nine bullet wounds to upper parts of his body. SHO Ghulam Fareed Afradi told The News that Naseem was an MQM activist.
After the incident, angry supporters of the party took to the streets and pelted passing vehicles with stones. They also forced owners of shops to close their businesses immediately. Police and Rangers personnel later brought the situation under control.
Abdul Razaq, 40, was shot and killed by assailants riding a motorcycle, who opened fire on him near Baldia Town No-9 in the Saeedabad police limits. He had been on a motorcycle when he was attacked. His body was taken to the ASH for a postmortem. SHO Saeedabad Ghulam Junejo told The News that the victim was an activist of the MQM’s Unit 113 and lived in Mojahir Camp.
Murder in Korangi
The bullet-riddled body of Ateeq, 25, was found near the wall of Naval Colony in Sector 51/C in Korangi in the Ibrahim Hyderi police limits.
Some residents saw his body and informed police. A mobile van arrived at the scene and took the body to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for a postmortem examination.
An eyewitness told police that two men along with Ateeq pulled up their motorcycle near the wall of Naval Colony. They then told Ateeq to stand near the wall and sprayed him with bullets. Police said the victim was a resident of Ilyas Goth.
