Govt urged to safeguard juvenile rights

LAHORE: The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has urged the government to keep in view the recent recommendations on juvenile justice by the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child while reviewing the Juvenile Justice System Ordinance (JJSO).

The HRCP has written this to the Ministry of Law, Justice and Human Rights, the Law and Justice Commission, and the National Commission for Child Welfare and Development, according to a statement released here on Wednesday.

It said Pakistan is a signatory to the CRC and added that in July 2000, the JJSO was introduced that focuses on the criminal justice process involving children.

The HRCP asked the government to give primary consideration to the interests of children and urged that this should be done without resorting to judicial proceedings.
