Govt to set up separate directorate for electronic media

electronic media, placing the print media exclusively under the control of PID, said Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan while addressing the regional convention of All Pakistan Newspaper Society (APNS) here.

The minister said that the government will make freedom of the media its strength and will use it as a marketing tool to combat the challenges confronting the nation. She said that after the directorate for electronic media has been set up, SOPs will be made to determine the share in advertising budget of the print and the electronic media. Important decisions in this regard will be taken in the next few days, she said.

Dr Firdous said that the government will safeguard the rights of owners as well as the workers of newspapers. When a delegation of PFUJ and press photographers called on President Zardari the other day, he issued directions that all newspaper employees be linked with the Employees Old Age Benefit Institution (EOBI) and they be provided life and health insurance facilities. She said that the government was examining the issue of workers of printing presses and mulling over means to patronize them in order to protect their rights. She hinted that the Wage Board case decision was expected on the next date of hearing and said that this would help in taking decisions about press workers.
