Govt must launch inquiry into journalist’s murder

ISLAMABAD, June 18 2006: The government must launch an impartial inquiry into the killing of a tribal journalist, Hayatullah, and arrest his killers at the earliest, said Former Prime Minster and the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairperson Benazir Bhutto on June 17. “Only an impartial and judicial probe can reveal the bloodstained hands behind the crime,” she said. She said that she had been greatly shocked and grieved due to the murder of the young journalist at the hands of unknown assailants.

She said that the murder of Hyatuallah was serious blow to the freedom of press and investigative journalism in the country, saying it had sent a warning signal to such journalists. She also prayed for the salvation of Hayatullah’s soul and offered her sympathies to his family.
