Government vows to address Hindus’ concerns

The Sindh government will address the Hindu community’s concerns over the purported forced conversions, the chief minister said on Tuesday.
“There is no truth to the reports that Hindus in Sindh are migrating to India. Only two or three such incidents have occurred,” Syed Qaim Ali Shah observed while talking to media during his visit to the Mazar-e-Quaid on the occasion of Pakistan’s 66th Independence Day. He was accompanied by Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad and members of the provincial cabinet.
The provincial chief executive said the government had formed committees, including one formed by the president, to look into the migration issue. “The committees have visited different areas and met with the leaders of the Hindu community.”
Shah noted that members of the Hindu community and other non-Muslims had embraced Islam in the past. “But the important thing is that Hindu women have usually married Muslim men after converting of their own free will.”
He said the law allowed a girl to marry of her free choice when she reached the age of maturity. “This issue was also taken up before the Supreme Court, where the women, who had converted and married Muslim men, said they had acted of their own free will and the court gave the verdict in their favour.”
Pointing out that currently three Sindh ministers were members of the Hindu community, the chief minister said the minorities were being given more facilities and legislation was underway to protect their rights.
