Government, APNS, CPNE discuss press laws

ISLAMABAD- The press laws were discussed between the government and the APNS and CPNE here 8th October 2002, with a spirit of accommodation and understanding.

The meeting was held between President of All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS) Hameed Haroon and President of the Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE) Mujibur Rehman Shami with Minister for Information and Media Development Nisar A Memon and the Minister for Law, Justice and Human Rights, Dr Khalid Ranjha here.

In-depth discussions on the three ordinances; Defamation, Press Council of Pakistan and the Press, Newspapers, News Agencies and Books Registration were held. They discussed various clauses of the ordinances in a spirit of accommodation and understanding and arrived at a consensus on issues raised during the meeting.

As regards the ordinance relating to the Freedom of Information, it was agreed that soon after the general election a joint committee of APNS and CPNE would meet the minister for information and media development and the minister for law and justice to discuss points of differences relating to this law.

Dr Khalid Ranjha, however, explained to the presidents of APNS and CPNE that there was nothing in the Freedom of Information Ordinance, which would adversely affect the operation of other laws.

In fact, he said, it rendered any person punishable if he destroys record, which was subject of request or any act done intended to prevent disclosure under this Ordinance. The secretary, Ministry of Information and Media Development, and senior officials of the Ministry were also present on the occasion.
