Girl killed after being branded kari by jirga

UMERKOT: A girl who left her home to marry the man of her choice is alleged to have been killed on Saturday after a jirga announced her kari. The jirga was held near Samaro.

Some villagers on the condition of anonymity told Dawn that Ms Gulzadi d/o Alam Khoso of village Niaz Khoso left her home to tie matrimonial knot with Tariq Shar s/o of sub-inspector Ghulam Mustafa Shar of Ram Jago.

Later, her parents persuaded her to come back with the promise to solemnize her Nikah with Tariq.

This encouraged the girl who made her debut at home on Eidul Azha. However, instead of fulfilling the promise, her parents arranged a jirga in the village which after declaring her kari signed her death warrants, an order which was subsequently carried out without a hitch and her body buried at an unknown place.

Ghulam Mustafa Shar, father of the boy for whom Gulzadi had left her home, told Dawn that his son was also missing since a day before the Eid and they were looking for clues or eyewitnesses who could confirm the death of the girl and her marriage with his son after which he will register a case.

Samaro police is still clueless and even the names of chieftains who held jirga are still a secret.

No case has been registered as yet. Samaro police said that male members of Khoso community have gone into hiding.
