Gang-rape case termed result of vengeance

KARACHI, July 30: Alleged gang-rape victim Kainat Soomro had married a youth of her free will earlier this year and a case has been lodged by her father against her husband Ahsan Thebo, his father and other relatives and friends out of vengeance, a non-governmental organisation claimed here on Monday.

Advocate Mujahid Ali Shah told reporters on behalf of the United Human Rights Council that Kainat and Ahsan married at Mehar, Dadu, in January.

Her father, Ghulam Nabi Soomro, was against the marriage and he instituted a false gang-rape case against Ahsan and his friends and relatives.

He showed their ‘nikahnama’ and photographs taken on the occasion of marriage.

The lawyer agreed that Kainat was 14 years old at the time of marriage but said she had the legal capacity to act on her behalf. In any case, he said, the question of validity of marriage was for a competent court to decide.

He urged Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry to take suo motu notice of ‘the media trial’ being conducted against the accused.

Inspection ordered

The Sindh High Court has ordered the inspection of a structure allegedly being raised in violation of the sanctioned plan and building regulations.

A non-governmental organisation moved a petition alleging that the owner of plot number A-197, Block 13-C, Gulshan-i-Iqbal, was raising construction on the compulsory open space, which was to be left uncovered under the rules.

The Karachi Building Control Authority, the petitioner said, was taking no action against the offending builder-owner.

Issuing notices to the respondent builder and the KBCA for a date in office, a division bench comprising Justices Mushir Alam and Zia Pervez asked the SHC deputy registrar (judicial) to inspect the site and submit a report.
