Foundation formed for newsmen

MUZAFFARABAD- The Azad Jummu Kashmir (AJK) government promulgated the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Press Foundation Ordinance, 2000, to establish a Press Foundation for the welfare of the AJK journalists.

The aims and objectives of the Foundation are to provide low cost accommodation to the journalists; to extend and improve medical facilities for them and their dependents; to provide grants, in case of death of any of the beneficiary; to provide grants, in case of marriage of the daughters and sons of the deserving members; and to do all such other things as are incidental or conducive to carry out the purposes and objectives of the Foundation.

A sitting high court judge, to be named by the chief justice would be the chairman of the Foundation while the secretary information and the director general, public relations department, would be its vice chairman and secretary by virtue of their offices. The Foundation would be administered by a board of governors, consisting chairman, vice chairman, secretary and ten members, who would be accredited journalists, nominated by the press clubs at the district headquarters and two unions of Journalists in Azad Kashmir.

Term of office of a board member, other than an ex-officio member, would be three years, but he/she would be eligible for re-appointment. The board would frame regulations and perform other functions to carry out the purposes of the establishment of the Foundation.

All the accredited AJK journalists, whether editors or representatives of daily newspapers, weekly magazines or any other periodical published in Azad Kashmir, would be eligible to become members of the Foundation.

The head office of the Foundation would be in Muzaffarabad. However, it could establish sub offices at such other places, as it deemed necessary.
