Five people dead in Balochistan violence

* Nine arrested for violence following Balach Marri’s killing

QUETTA: Siren voices echoed in the Quetta air throughout Wednesday evening following the eruption of violence in various parts of the provincial capital and districts of Balochistan as the news of Balach Marri’s killing flashed on TV screens, resulting in the death of five persons, mainly personnel of law enforcement agencies.

In Quetta, unidentified persons opened fire on Punjabi settlers in Kalat Street and killed three persons. One of the dead persons includes an inspector. Two were reported to be local residents.

In another incident, two police officers were killed and three injured in the Brewery Police Station area when their patrolling team was ambushed by a mob of angry people. Consequently, a police personnel, Constable Rehmatullah died on the spot while the other police driver, Jumah Khan, perished at the Bolan Medical Complex. The same incident left SHO Khalid Saifullah, Assistant Sub-inspector Mohammad Nasir and Constable Ghulam Farooq injured.

Nationalist sources said 90 Baloch students and political workers, who agitated on the roads to condemn the killing of Marri, the top-most Baloch guerilla commander, were taken into police custody. In addition, some 25 people were arrested in Noshaki in connection to their protests against the killing of Marri. As the news permeated, students of the University of Balochistan (UoB) and the Bolan Medical College (BMC) took to the streets and reacted to the incident. They burnt official vehicles. Police had to open fire in the air to disperse the students. Students also blocked the Sariab and Brewery Roads by burning tires and protesting against the government. Two police personnel were injured in a bomb blast near a WAPDA grid station.

Unidentified persons burnt the office of the Election Commission and a parked vehicle. They also torched the official record books. Suspected student activists burnt the office of Executive District Officer for Livestock Department. A local resident told Daily Times via phone that the livestock office was located near the degree college.

9 arrested: Sariab Police have so far arrested nine people here on Wednesday night for creating law and order situation by resorting to violence during protest against the killing of Marri, Sariab Police told APP.
