Final list of contestants of Press Club elections released

ISLAMABAD- Chairman of election committee Rawalpindi-Islamabad Press Club, Muhammad llyas Shahid has released final list of contestants for Club elections 2000-2001 to be held on the 26th.

According to details following the withdrawal nomination papers by candidates, 3 vice presidents, one cashier and secretary have been elected unopposed. The elected vice presidents include Abu Bakar Mushtaq (daily Pakistan), Muhammad Hanif Khalid (Jang) and Hamid Habib (Khabrain), Mushtaq Minhas (daily Din) and Masud Abdul Rahim (Jang) have been elected unopposed as secretary and cashier.

Mazhar Iqbal from daily Assas and Muhammad Nawaz Raza from daily Nawa-i-Waqt will contest election for the office of president. Four candidates will contest election for the seat of joint secretary. Candidates include Naveed Akram (News), Zameer Qadri (NNl), Nasir Mehmood and Ahmad Bhatti from the daily Din. About 16 candidates will be contesting for 15 seats of governing body. The candidates include Ejaz Khan, Zahid Yaqub, Khawaja Javed Akhtar, Naveed Akbar, Malik Asif Karim, Aziz Alvi, Shaukat Malik, Syed Sultan Shah, Raja Atif, Zulliqar Kamal Azfar, Aamir Sohail, and Asad Abbas. Shazia Malik, Zaigham Javed Kiani, Haroon Kamal and Ali Raza Alvi.

A group of journalists led by Ms Fouzia Shahid has withdrawn nomination papers for 63 seats with some reservations. The election will be held on the 26th from 11 am to 6 pm at Rawalpindi-Islamabad Press Club. Burna group boycotts elections Rawalpindi-lslamabad Union of Journalists (Burna Group) has announced to boycott Rawalpindi-Islamabad Press Club elections 2000-2001 and withdrawn nomination papers of its 63 candidates.

The decision was made in an emergent meeting of executive council of RIUJ held here under its president Pervez Shaukat. According to details the decision for boycott has been made against illegal cancellation of membership of over 300 members of the club, inclusion of non-journalists names in voters list despite objections raised by the members of scrutiny committee, change of name of Press Club unconstitutionally and biased and absolutely partial attitude of election committee.
