Cyber wing in information ministry on cards

ISLAMABAD – The government is contemplating to establish a cyber wing in the ministry of information and broadcasting at a cost of Rs39.4 million to counter propaganda from across the borders, an official source told Dawn in Islamabad on April 19. The hub of the wing, the source said, would be connected to all other departments, wings and corporations working under the ministry of information and broadcasting.

The office of the chief executive, army house, National Security Council, cabinet and Prime Minister’s office would also be connected to the main hub of the wing for dispatching prompt information and rapid response, the source said.

The cyber wing will provide nationals and friends of Pakistan with loads of information about the country and its relations with other nations, the source said. “The project will disseminate information about the country, its allies and partners, its enemies and adversaries to writers and columnists both local and international for use as reference and writing material,” the source said, adding that it would keep people and organizations around the world to have access to all information, latest developments and role of Pakistan in the modern world.

The project, if implemented, would be a significant leap in Pakistan’s publicity efforts to an almost infinite global reach, he said. When fully functional, the cyber wing will objectively put forth Pakistan’s viewpoint on relevant issues before worldwide audience.

The project will also supplement the ongoing projection and publicity efforts of different other wings, departments and corporations of the ministry. The purpose of the project, the source explained, was to protect and project Pakistan through information management electronically.
