CPNE CONDEMNS killing of two journalists

KARACHI ,February 09 2005: Arif Nizami, President of Council of Pakistan Newspapers Editors (CPNE), has strongly condemned the killing of two journalists in Wana and has called it an act of terrorism against the press freedom as well as against the peoples’ right to know.

In a statement on Tuesday he observed that the recent attacks on media were an indication that the journalists were prevented from conducting the objective reporting in Pakistan. He said that such attempts reflected the desire of nefarious elements in society to subjugate the press according to their whims.

Nizami demanded the government to probe into this incident and punish the culprits. He urged the government to take necessary measures to protect media practitioners and other journalists so that free and fair press flourishes in the society and journalists could perform their duties without fear. He condoled with the family of Allah Noor Wazir of AVT Khyber and Amir Nawab, correspondent of The Nation, who have died in the line of duty.

The president of CPNE further demanded immediate withdrawal of the case against the senior journalist of Daily Awam Afzal Nadeem, who was booked under Official Secret Act, for publishing a news item based on a letter by National Crisis Management Cell (NCMC).

He termed it a direct violation of the press freedom and reflective of government’s intolerance. Arif Nizami strongly demanded that the Official Secret Act should be abolished as it restrained the press from objective reporting.
