Council of Pakistan Newspapers Editors (CPNE) asks newspapers to work for country’s unity

LAHORE- The Council of Pakistan Newspapers Editors (CPNE) has appealed to the newspapers to play their role for the unity, fraternity of the country and avoid publishing such material, which may give impetus to sectarian strife.

This was observed in a meeting of CPNE’s standing committee chaired by council’s president, Arif Nizami. A resolution was passed during the meeting which expressed concern and regret over the sad incident of the publishing of a blasphemous letter in The Frontier Post which incited strong public reaction. The resolution maintained that while respect of the religious personalities is the prime obligation of every Muslim and utmost care should be taken that no blasphemous material gets published in the papers and publications which are members of CPNE.

The meeting called upon the government that all those who are the culprits in this case of The Frontier Post must be treated under the law and given exemplary punishment. The meeting also asked the Ulema in Peshawar to help in improving the social environment in which the regular publication of the dailies The Frontier Post and Maidan may become possible. It was also demanded that the police surveillance of the office of daily Jasarat, Peshawar, be removed and the office equipment be returned immediately. It was decided that a high-level delegation of CPNE will go to Peshawar and meet the religious leaders and the NWFP governor. The meeting also finalized the arrangements of reception to be held in the honour of Chief Executive (CE) Pervez Musharraf, on March 12.
