Council of Pakistan Newspaper Edtiors (CPNE) deplores Deputy Commissioner (DC) Islamabad action, calls for order revocation

KARACHI- The Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors has strongly deplored the action of the Deputy Commissioner (DC), Islamabad, canceling the declaration of the daily Pakistan, Islamabad, and called for the revocation of the order.

The CPNE Standing Committee adopted a resolution to deplore the action and maintained that the Deputy Commissioner had misused the authority vested in him and directed the Secretary General, CPNE, Zahid Malik to take up the issue with the concerned authorities immediately.

The CPNE Standing Committee, in its regular meeting presided over by Mr. Mujibur Rehman Shami, approved the minutes of the last meeting. It also heard the report from Secretary General Zahid Malik on the amicable settlement of Mr. Khushnood Ali Khan’s complaint on cut in government advertisements due to the editorial contents of his two newspapers Sahafat and Dephr. The meeting hoped that the government would adhere to the agreement.

The meeting also decided that the Secretary-General should proceed with the formalities for registration of the Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors with the Registrar of Societies and report back on the subject at the next meeting of the Standing Committee.

The meeting also authorized the Secretary General to establish contact with newspaper editors’ organizations in other countries of the world.

A suggestion of framing national objectives of the Council was also considered and it was decided that proposal on the subject be submitted at the next meeting of the Standing Committee.

The meeting also held a general discussion on the need for early promulgation of the revised Press and Publication and Printing Presses Ordinance along with the incorporation of the suggestion made by the CPNE.

Those who took part in the discussion included Mr. M. A Zuberi, Mr. Arif Nizami, Mr. Mehmudul Aziz, Mr. Zia Shahid, Mr. Syed Fasih Iqbal, Mr. Saleem Asmi, Mr. Mumtaz Tahir and Mr. Abdul Rashid Ghazi.

The meeting was also attended by Mr. Zahid Malik (Pakistan Observer), Mr. Anwar Farooqui (Aghaz), Dr. Jabbar Khatak (Awami Awaaz), Hafiz Bashir Ahmed (Massawat), Mr. Mushtaq Ahmed Qureshi (Nai Ufaq), Javed Mehar Shami (Kaleem), Wasim Ahmed (Awam Quetta), Abdul Rashid Ghazi (Business Report), Jamil Athar (Tijarat), Sajjad Mir (Nawa-i-Waqt) and Aamer, Mahmud (Khawateen Digest).
