Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors asks government to convene meeting on press laws

KARACHI- The President of the Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE), Mujib-ur-Rehman Shami, and Secretary General Mahmud-ul-Aziz, in a joint statement, while welcoming the promulgation of the ordinances by the federal government relating to the newspapers and periodicals and news agencies registration and the Press Council as also Freedom of Information, called upon the government to convene a meeting, as promised, at the earliest, to sort out the amendments to these legislations, specially the Defamation Ordinance, as proposed by CPNE and All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS).

The CPNE office-bearers said that they welcomed the promulgation of the ordinances relating to registration of newspapers, periodicals, news agencies and books and printing presses and would strongly urge upon the government to finalise the rules as also the appointment of a Registrar without delay, and hopefully in keeping with the submissions made by the representative organisations of the print media, CPNE and APNS and other organisations in this matter.

“The CPNE welcomes the promulgation of these ordinances in the spirit, now a framework is available in respect of registration of newspapers and periodicals and the ambiguities faced by the publishers and printers would be overcome,” they added. But, they said, the CPNE hopes that the government in keeping with the spirit of working relationship would also act speedily to hold a meeting to finalise the amendments, specially to the Defamation Ordinance and the package of three ordinances as proposed by CPNE and APNS.
