Cop kills alleged blasphemer in lock-up, injures another

GUJRAT/LALAMUSA: A police killed an alleged blasphemer and injured another in the Kharian Cantonment police limits on Friday.

Gujrat B-Division police booked four people under Section 295-C of the PPC, including the author and composers of two books, which allegedly contained derogatory remarks about Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and other prophets.

Police arrested composers Mian Qasim Ansari of Jallalpur Jattan and Irfan Naeem of Shah Faisal Gate, Gujrat and Ghafoor Aslam of Model Town, Gujrat, who arranged an inaugural ceremony for the books. However, the books’ author, Mirza Younas alias Asar Chughtai, is still at large.

The police shifted the arrested accused to Kharian for security measures.

On the day of the incident, constable Saqib opened indiscriminate fire on the people detained in a lock-up. As a result, accused Mian Qasim Ansari died on the spot while Irfan Naeem sustained bullet injuries.

The injured was shifted to a hospital. Police sent the body to a mortuary for an autopsy.

However, Ghafoor Aslam remained unhurt. Police arrested Saqib and registered a case against him. Further investigations are under way.
