Civil society workers protest Munir Malik’s detention

* Express solidarity with deposed judges and media

ISLAMABAD: The civil society members on Sunday staged a protest demonstration against the detention of Munir A Malik, former president of the Supreme Court Bar Association.

The protestors, over 60 in number, gathered in front of the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) and condemned the government for Malik’s detention. They said the government kept him under detention without any justification and provided no medical treatment to him that resulted in his ailment.

They also condemned the government for violation of fundamental rights of the citizens and asked for an end to the state of emergency and restoration of the constitution. They said only the rule of law could help return normalcy in the country.

They also expressed concern over the detention of deposed chief justice (CJ) Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry. They demanded restoration of the deposed CJ and other judges who refused to take oath under the Provisional Constitutional Order (PCO). They said Chaudhry and non-PCO judges were their heroes as they were providing justice to common people.

They also condemned the government for media curbs. They demanded that the government give citizens their right to freedom of expression.

Solidarity: The protestors expressed their solidarity with deposed judges and media persons and vowed to continue their struggle till an end to the state of emergency and media curbs and restoration of deposed judges.

They were carrying placards inscribed with slogans demanding restoration of deposed judges and the constitution and a free media. They also raised anti-government slogans. Later, they dispersed peacefully.

They also visited Malik in the hospital, expressed solidarity with him and prayed for his early recovery. A heavy contingent of police was present at PIMS to avoid any untoward situation.
