City Council demands rescinding of author’s knighthood

Karachi:The City District Council, on Monday unanimously demanded that the British government rescind the knighthood conferred upon Salman Rushdie, the author of the blasphemous book ‘Satanic Verses.’

The treasury and opposition benches of the City Council once again regained their unity and unanimity of views on condemning the conferral of knighthood to the Britain-settled writer who earned widespread hatred of the Muslim world. A number of treasury and opposition members spoke on the resolution moved on the issue of knighthood conferral to Rushdie and expressed their serious resentment over the act of the British queen causing widespread anger and disgust in the Muslim world.

Senior Presiding Officer of the City Council, Masood Mahmood chaired the session in the absence of City Naib Nazim Nasreen Jalil. While speaking on the resolution, leader of the Haq Parast group endorsed the demanded of the City Council’s opposition leader Saeed Ghani that Pakistan should withdraw its high commissioner from the Britain in protest against the British queen’s act of awarding knighthood to Rushdie. Rafique Ahmed of the opposition, Al-Khidmat group also spoke on the resolution and severely castigated the move of the queen for honouring the infamous writer.

Later, the City Council members unanimously staged a demonstration outside the council hall. In the meanwhile, the Council also unanimously adopted a resolution of condolence over the deaths of two workers of the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) and one serviceman of the Fire Brigade department in an accident near Pakistan Chowk, on Saturday night.
