Blasphemy accused stabbed to death in court

MUZAFFARGARH, June 17 2006: Two youths, Muhammad Imran and Muhammad Iqbal, stabbed an alleged blasphemer Abdul Sattar Gopang to death on the district courts premises here on June 16. A sub-inspector Abdul Ghafoor also sustained injuries. Both were taken to the hospital where Gopang succumbed to his injuries. Acting DPO Muhammad Zubair Dreshak said two men identified as Imran and Iqbal armed with daggers attacked Gopang. When the SI tried to save Gopang, the attackers also stabbed him.

The blasphemer was taken to DHQ hospital in a critical condition but could not survive because he received more than a dozen stabs’, he added. The police have arrested the attackers because they did not try to escape. AFP adds from Multan: A frenzied mob beat a teacher to death, when he tried to help a cleric in a row over the alleged desecration of the holy Quran, a local police chief said on June 16.

The cleric was attacked by more than 1,000 people in Hasilpur, after the accusation that he desecrated the holy Qur’aan, Nasir Sayal told AFP. “A retired schoolteacher came in and tried to save the cleric but he was also severely beaten by the mob and later died in hospital,” he said. Both the victims belonged to the Jamaat-ud-Dawa, he added. An angry crowd also attacked a police vehicle and broke its windscreen when it tried to rescue the two men, Sayal said.
