Aziz distributes cheques to slain journalists’ families

ISLAMABAD, July 29 2005: Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz on July 28 urged journalists to make constructive criticism against the government and play an active role in safeguarding the country’s interests.

He was speaking at a ceremony at Prime Minster’s House to distribute cheques among relatives of two journalists who were killed by militants in the line of duty in Wana, South Waziristan Agency.

He distributed cheques for Rs 500,000 each to the relatives of two journalists, Allah Noor and Mir Nawab. He also gave a cheque for Rs 500,000 to an injured journalist, Anwar Shakir. He announced that children of slain and injured journalists would receive free education up to matriculation.

The prime minister said that both electronic and print media were free to criticise the government so that it could improve its policies and workings. He said journalists, particularly those working for the electronic media, must verify their reports before filing. Information Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed paid tribute to journalists and security forces for performing their duties in the tribal areas.
