Atta minister in charge of Science and Technology

ISLAMABAD- Dr Atta-ur-Rahman on July 11th, 2003 took the charge of the Ministry of Science and Technology as minister in charge.

Prime Minister Zafarullah Khan Jamali has appointed Dr Atta in charge of the ministry with the status of a federal minister, said an official announcement on July 11th, 2003.

Dr Atta, a professor of chemistry by profession, visited the ministry and held meetings with Secretary Shahzad Hassan Pervaiz and other senior officials. The Science and Technology Division was without a minister since the Jamali government took charge.

Dr Atta is neither a member of the National Assembly nor the Senate. When contacted by telephone for comments on the issue, Dr Atta said: “I am not in a position to decide as to how would I be brought in parliament.” He said it is up to the prime minister to decide.

Dr Atta would only be taking care of the affairs of the ministry, which does not include the IT and Telecom Division. Owais Leghari would continue to serve as the IT and Telecom minister.

Besides being the minister in charge, Dr Atta also holds the portfolio of federal minister for being chairman of the Higher Education Commission and coordinator general of the Comstech.

He was minister for science and technology during General Pervez Musharraf’s tenure as chief executive. Earlier, he was also responsible for the IT and Telecom Division.
