LAHORE: Senior journalist Akhtar Hayat passed away here on Tuesday morning and was laid to rest at Miani Sahib Graveyard the same day.

Akhtar Hayat had sustained head injuries in an accident outside Lahore Press Club on Monday. He was taken to General Hospital where he succumbed to the injury. He has survived by two sons.

A large number of journalists, politicians, and people from various walks of life attended the funeral procession held at Masjide Hameeda, Journalist Colony, Harbanspura.

Among the eminent PML-N leaders Khwaja Ahmad Hassaan, Khwaja Imran, former MNA Farooq Amjad Mir, Editor-in-Chief daily Pakistan, Mujidur Rahman Shami, President Lahore Press Club Arshad Ansari, Vice Preisident Javed Farooqi, Secretary Shahbaz Mian, Treasurar Afzal Talib, Azeem Qureshi, Salman Ghani, Nasir Naqvi, Sami Ibraheem, Iftikhtar Ahmad, MPA Ch Waheed Gull, Ch Munawar Ahmad of PPP, Tasleem Sanaullah, Anjum Rashid, Haider Hassan, Mubashir Hassan and others were present at the funeral.

The professional career of the deceased is spread over 30 years during which he served both print and electronic media. Akhtar Hayat commanded high respect in the journalistic community for his professional acumen and cheerful nature. During his career he wrote books on various subjects and plays for radio. The death of Akhtar has left a big void in the journalist community of town. The Governor Punjab, Ch Muhammad Sarwar and Chief Minister Muhammad Shabaz Sharif have expressed grief over the demise of Akhtar Hayat and prayed for the departed soul.

Qull of the deceased will be held at Masjide Hameeda, Journalist Colony, at 2pm on Wednesday (today).
