After Geo Super, Aag, Pemra threatens to suspend Geo News transmission

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) Friday issued a show cause notice to Geo News for, what is called, airing programmes in sheer contravention to patriotism as well as in disregard to the Code of Conduct.

Geo News on May 12 around 7:56 pm aired a considerably derogatory song “Kon Sacha Kon Jhuta” maligning and demeaning the government as well as the armed forces, said a press release received here.

It is reiterated that under section 20 of Pemra Ordinance (Amended as Pemra Act 2007) read with clause1 (g), (h), (j), (o) and (p) of Pemra Code of Conduct contained in Pemra Rules 2009 and licence terms and conditions prohibit airing of any such programme.

The said clauses are reproduced as under:(1) No programme should be aired which: (g) contains aspersions against the judiciary and integrity of the Armed Forces of Pakistan;(h) maligns or slanders any individual in person or certain groups, segments of social, public and moral life of the country; (j) brings into contempt Pakistan or its people or tends to undermine its integrity or solidarity as an independent and sovereign country; (o) contains material which may be detrimental to Pakistan’s relations with friendly countries; or(p) contains material which is against ideology of Pakistan or Islamic values.

Pemra has requested Geo News channel to immediately stop airing any programme/ debate or material which is perceived against national security, sovereignty or integrity. Moreover, Geo News has been asked to show cause immediately but not later than three days, failing which legal action shall be taken against the channel for such serious and deliberate violation. Furthermore, on repeated violation, Pemra shall be constrained to suspend transmission of the channel in exercise of relevant provisions of Pemra laws.
