900 towns, villages to get Internet facility by June-end

LAHORE- Internet facility will reach up to 900 small towns and villages by the end of June, 2002, Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) Chairman Mian M. Humayun said.

He said, at present, 576 cities, villages and towns had been provided internet facility with the aim to promote information technology in the country.

He explained just two years ago only 36 cities were enjoying the said facility, but now its sphere was being broadened with rocket pace to face the digital age challenges.

Humayun said this step would help in promoting IT and computer science education in the villages and small towns.

The PITB chief said the government was giving serious thought to uplift IT education in the country, and in this regard, the concrete measures were being taken.

Citing an example, he said recently, the science and technology ministry had launched a virtual university to provide equal opportunities to the intelligent students of remote areas. “Through this university, they can seek admission and can study through internet”, he added.

He said the courses of the said university had been designed according to international standards and demands so that the fresh graduates feel comfortable to join concerned profession.

He said another feature of the University was its cheapest fees in comparison to fees of other university.
