The Violent Extremism Prevention Unit of the Islamabad Police  blocked 462 social media accounts identified as promoting dangerous content. The targeted accounts fueled religious hatred, sectarian divides, linguistic hatred and anti-state propaganda.

After a thorough investigation, the unit identified over 1,522 accounts across platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook that were actively spreading negativity and harmful rhetoric. They wrote letter to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to initiate the closure of these accounts.

Of the targeted accounts, 65 were dedicated to inciting religious hatred, sowing discord among different faith communities.  Another 47 accounts were identified as spreading anti-state propaganda, actively working to undermine public trust in the government. Most alarmingly, 350 accounts were directly linked to terrorism-related content, posing a serious threat to national security.

Officials have confirmed that the remaining 1,060 social media accounts flagged during the operation are also in the process of being closed.

“On social media and other websites this unit reviews political, linguistic, religious extremist content and prepares reports along with identifying the criminal activities, upon which legal action is taken”,  stated Islamabad Capital City Police Officer (ICCPO) Dr. Akbar Nasir Khan.

Khan urged citizens to refrain from engaging in such activities and warned that legal action will be taken against those involved. He encouraged citizens to report any suspicious online activity through the “Pucar-15” hotline or the “ICT” 15 App.
