ISLAMABAD- The government has asked individuals and companies in the private sector to set up information technology (IT) parks in the provincial as well as federal capitals and the Azad Kashmir.

The decision has been taken in view of the success of the two public sectors IT parks.

The ministry of science and technology will provide funds for up to 5km of fibre optic cable from the nearest Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) exchange to the park. The government will also provide cross-connect equipment at the park premises. The IT companies, registered with the Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB), would be allowed international communication facilities for voice, data, video-conference and multimedia exchanges.

The park operators will purchase a minimum of 256K bandwidth from the PTCL, which would be increased to 2MB within the first year of operations.

The bandwidth will not be sold or utilized beyond the park premises or for Internet service. The park operators will be allowed to oversell up to a maximum of 25 per cent of the subscribed capacity.
