‘Bol’ highlights miseries in the life of a eunuch: Bobby

Faisal Kamal Pasha

RAWALPINDI: ‘Bol’ is the first film in Pakistan’s history in which eunuchs are not mocked or made fun of. Instead, it shows the trauma associated with their lives, said Almas Bobby, president of the Shemale Rights Association.

Bobby is the only actor hailing from Rawalpindi who has performed in this blockbuster movie. Talking to ‘The News,’ Bobby said: “The experience of working with Shoaib Mansoor was wonderful. I learnt a lot from him.”

Almas Bobby thanked Shoaib Mansoor for highlighting miseries in the life of a eunuch, saying that before this the topic was a taboo.

In movies and plays, the character of a ‘Khusra’ was always included just for humour, but in ‘Bol’ it was otherwise. The film got an appeal in it as far as its topic is concerned, Bobby said. Talking about the film in which his father on the pretext of honour killed a ‘Khusra’ member of the family, Bobby said that such murders are committed in many cities of Pakistan.

Bobby said that he has been creating awareness among the people about accepting the third gender as a reality and provide them with space to exist. It is due to such efforts that the government has now recognised the third gender as a part of society and the society too is providing them with space.

According to Bobby, six to seven years back, ‘Khusras’ were terrified of walking in front of a police station. Whenever a ‘Khusra’ was murdered anywhere, police used to harass all eunuchs of the city.

Police used to thrash them and snatch their valuables. Most ‘Khusras’ had to leave their city in such a situation. “Now our community has gathered enough courage that they face such actions. They lodge FIRs and have learnt to protest for their rights. This is all because of awareness,” Bobby said.

Bobby said that ‘Bol’ is very good as far as the sensitisation of the general public is concerned. It shows that how ruthlessly society behaves with members of third-gender community. It is society’s attitude that prevents eunuchs from attending schools or choosing profession.

“I myself did not attend college due to the attitude of society. Then I left the house and joined my community. ‘Bol’ will be helpful in changing attitude of society towards eunuchs,” Bobby said.

Almas Bobby has now signed another film — ‘My Heart is in China’. The film is based on Pakistan-China friendship. Bobby said that the Geo Films production ‘Bol’ proved to be a good omen for him and now he is getting some offers.

He asserted that real ‘khusras’ should be inducted to perform the role of a ‘khusra’ in movies. He hoped that such movies would change the mindset of society.
