SC seeks reply from govt over minorities’ rights protection

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court (SC) on Monday issued a rejoinder to the federal government and sought a reply over the brutal lynching of a Christian couple in Kot Radha Kishan regarding its verdict from last June for the protection of minorities’ rights.

The SC registrar office has sent rejoinder to Establishment Division, Ministry of Religious Affairs and Inter-Faith Harmony including federal and provincial governments to reply over the compliance of June 19 judgement of the top court for the protection of minorities rights in Pakistan. The top court has asked the government that the SC in its verdict over the Peshawar Church attack case has ordered the incumbent government to legislate and take effective steps for ensuring the complete protection of minorities rights their lives and properties but Kot Radha Kishan brutal incident against minorities happened.

The apex court has directed the attorney general of Pakistan to inform the top court about the compliance of the June 19, 2014, verdict and submit a detailed report on it that what steps were taken by the incumbent government to implement the top court orders in this regard. It is pertinent to mention that this is the first reminder to the government after the issuance of the detailed judgement of the apex court regarding the protection of minorities’ rights in the country. In its verdict the top court directed the government to constitute a National Council for the purpose to save the minorities rights and to monitor the practical realisation of the rights and safeguards to the minorities under the constitution of Pakistan.

The apex court in its verdict assigned the National Council for minorities to frame policy and recommendation for safeguarding the minorities’ rights by the federal and provincial governments. Similarly the top court directed the government to formulate a special task force to save the worship places of the minorities that judgement of the apex court was authored by the former chief justice of Pakistan Justice Tassudaq Husasin Jillani. The apex court also directed the government in its verdict to develop appropriate curricula at school and college level for promoting the religious and cultural tolerance in the country and also directed to implement the service quota system for the minorities to accommodate them in the jobs.
