Karachi: Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, patron-in-chief of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), on Thursday condemned the killing of senior journalist Shaan Dahar in Larkana and asked the Sindh government to bring the culprits to book.

“I was shocked to hear that another senior journalist has fallen to bullets that too on the very first day of the new year,” he said in a press release issued from the Media Cell of the Bilawal House.

He said the growing use of guns and bullets to silence individuals on any basis “is an evil trend against which whole society has to rise up”. He stressed that the authorities should investigate the motives behind the killings, besides taking steps to provide protection to the journalist community during the performance of their duty.

Bilawal expressed sympathy with the members of his bereaved family.

In a separate statement, the young PPP leader congratulated the newly elected office-bearers of the Karachi Press Club with the hope that they would ensure freedom of press and freedom of expression, besides working for the welfare of the journalist community.

He said the press club was the largest oldest and historic institution of media persons in Pakistan. He appreciated the role of press club during the nation’s struggle for the restoration of democracy against ruthless dictatorial regimes in the past.
