Writer Hameed Sindhi passes away
HYDERABAD: Writer and educationist Abdul Hameed Memon, known by his nom de plume Hameed Sindhi, breathed his last on Friday. He was 80 years old.
According to Sindhi’s family, he had a cardiac arrest at his home in Qasimabad, Hyderabad, following which he died. His body was later shifted to his ancestral town in Naushahro Feroze District for the burial.
Writers, poets and educationists in the province have expressed grief over the demise of Sindhi who authored 11 books in Sindhi language. He was awarded Tamgha-e-Imtiaz in 1990 and Aizaz-e-Fazeelat in 1993.
His book ‘Veeron’ [waves] won him awards from Pakistan Academy of Letters, Pakistan Writers Guild and Sindhology in 1981. The National Book Foundation also awarded him on his work ‘Ranha jee Rajput’.
Sindhi headed the Sindh Agriculture University, Tandojam and Shah Abdul Latif University, Khaipur, as the vice-chancellor. He also worked as the chairperson of Sindh Text Book Board, Sindhi Language Authority and Public School Hyderabad.
He obtained early education in his home district Naushehro Feroze and graduated in economics from the University of Sindh (SU), Jamshoro. Sindh began his professional career as a publicity officer in 1960s and later, he also joined the banking sector for a brief period.
Sindhi also served as the controller examinations and registrar of SU, Sindhology additional director and director colleges. He has been survived by his wife, son, two daughters and grandchildren.
