Workshop on women’s rights to start on 22nd

ISLAMABAD: Action Aid Pakistan is organising a two-day training workshop on ‘Women’s rights and gender sensitive reporting of crimes against women’ here on November 22-23.

The main objective of the workshop is to sensitise journalists about women’s rights issues, raise awareness of various forms of abuses of women’s rights, identify patriarchal elements within and outside the society and elaborate the role of media in promoting human rights and social profile of women.

South Asia is considered to be the least gender sensitive region of the world where women carry out 60 percent of the work but obtain only 10 percent of wages and own less than only one percent of land.

The root cause of their exclusion and subjection lies in the deeply entrenched patriarchal institutions, local customs, beliefs and socio-political systems.

Increasing violence against women, lack of access and control over land and other natural resources, discriminatory wages and restrained political participation in some South Asian countries are the issues that still need to be addressed. Mass media has a role to play in promoting and protecting women’s rights by encouraging their participation in economic, political and social processes.
