Women’s role in education management vital: experts

RAWALPINDI: Involvement of women in higher education management would help overcome the scarcity of manpower at senior management level and provide women an opportunity to play constructive role in the society. These were the unanimous views of the experts in a two-day workshop held at Fatima Jinnah Women University on “Women in Higher Education Management”, here on Thursday. The key-speakers of the workshop were Dr Najma Najam, Vice Chancellor FJWU, Professor Dr I.N. Hassan of FJWU, Professor Dr Kerstin Laegerstrom from Karolonska Institute, Sweden and Professor Dr Ingegerd Palmer from Malardalen University, Sweden. The participants attending the workshop include senior women academicians and administrators of both public and private sector varsities from different regions of Pakistan.

The workshop has been organised to sensitise the women to the issues they face in advancing their careers; plan strategies for improving their own competencies; attempt changes in the university environments in which they work enabling them to train other women. Reports presented during the first day of the workshop highlighted the scarcity of women at senior management levels like Registrar, Deputy Chief Librarian or Heads of Department. Later on talking to journalists, the VC, Dr Najma Najam said the workshop would help in enhancing the capacity of women academics, improving their networking and information/experience sharing. It would also help change the culture of universities to make women more competitive for senior management positions, she added.
