Where is Journalists Colony park?

LAHORE — The Lahore High Court on Thursday directed Punjab Journalist Housing Foundation to submit a written statement by June 6 next about developing park in Lahore Press Club Housing Scheme in Harbanspura on an alternative land.

Earlier proceeding with the petition filed by senior journalist Din Muhammad Dard, assistant advocate general Shan Gull appeared for the respondent and argued that the park of the LPC housing scheme will be shifted to an adjacent land and that it was wrongly stated by the petitioner that the same was being eliminated by way of converting it into a residential area to accommodate newly added 295 members of the Club.

He argued that in all the decisions of Supreme Court cited by the petitioner, the parks were already existed and public had started using them so that their conversion for any other usage was barred by the court. And in all these cases the conversion of the parks was not duly approved by authorities concerned.

He said the present case was entirely different from the cases referred to by the petitioner as park at the Journalist Colony was yet to be developed for the public. He said the PJHF decided to shift the under-construction park to an adjacent land which could not be used for residential purpose. He said the park was being shifted to facilitate the members of the club who had not yet got their allotted plots for some reasons.

Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed asked the law officer that he will dispose of the matter if the court was assured in writing that the park will be developed on the substitute land.

At this Mr. Gull sought time to seek written commitment from the government and the court adjourned hearing till June 6. Advocate Amir Rehman represented Lahore Press Club.

The petitioner contends that the land once fixed for developing a park for the residents of the colony cannot be shifted to any other purpose. The petitioner also referred to superior courts authorities to substantiate the point. The court on January 21 last through a stay order had restrained Punjab government from converting park into residential plots.
