Warrants for eight policemen issued

KARACHI, Oct 3: The additional district and sessions judge-II, central, Nilofer Shahnawaz Azimi, on Wednesday issued non-bailable arrest warrants for eight police officials for not complying with the court’s orders and directed the police high-ups to ensure their appearance in court on Oct 10.

For the past five years, the police officials have not been appearing in court to testify as prosecution witnesses in a road accident case. Two intermediate students Nida Afzaal and Ravia Beenish of the APWA College, Karimabad, were killed and many others injured on Feb 19, 2002 when the driver of route 5-C bus (JA 5983) while racing with another bus lost control.

The driver, Mohammad Munawwar, and the bus owner, Mohammad Ibrahim, were arrested on the spot, and a case (FIR No 054/2002) was registered against them at the Sharifabad police station under Sections 320, 322 and 337 of the Pakistan Penal Code. They were later released on bail.

The court issued non-bailable warrants for Inspector Suhail Ahmed, Assistant Sub-Inspector Mir Mohammad (Traffic Section), ASI Irfan, ASI Ghulam Hussain, SI Zafar Iqbal, Inspector Mohammad Jamil (motor vehicle inspection wing) and Constable Zahoor (Traffic Section), who failed to appear as prosecution witnesses in the case.

The court had also summoned two students Madeeha and Shahida, who were injured in the accident, and a Sub-Inspector Zafar Iqbal as a witnesses but they did not turn up. They have been summoned again on the next hearing.

Murder case

The same court, meanwhile, issued non-bailable arrest warrants for four other police officials for not appearing in court despite the repeated reminders issued to them in a murder case.

According to the prosecution, Azad Hussein was sitting at his shop when he was shot dead in New Karachi police limits on Feb 10, 2002. Police arrested Hafiz Ghulam Abbas, Saifullah, Mohammad Javaid and Rajab Ali, but all were later released on bail.

SI Khurshid Khan, SI Sadaqat Ali, ASI Saleem Cheema and Head Constable Fayaz Shah are prosecution witnesses in the case, but they have not been appearing in the court. Besides issuing the NBWs, the court directed the police department to stop their salaries and ensure their presence in the next hearing on Oct 18.

Snatchings

A judicial magistrate, east, Asim Saeed Khan Lodhi, complained to another judicial magistrate-10, south, Asif Ahmed, against two investigation officers for not appearing in court to submit a charge-sheet in different cases of street crime.

In his letter, the magistrate stated that ASI Mohammad Ali of Gulistan-i-Jauhar police station had so far not appeared in court to submit a charge-sheet against three accused Sanwaro, son of Abdul Aziz, Ghulam Zaid, son of Rahim Bukhsh, and Mehmood, son of Huzoor Bukhsh.

According to the case registered with the police, the three accused had snatched Rs40,000 and a cellular phone from Imam Bukhsh on May 22, 2007.

The accused produced for the trial were granted bail. However, the investigation officer has failed to submit a charge-sheet against them since then.

In another letter, the magistrate complained that ASI Rabnawaz of the Gulshan-i-Iqbal police station had failed to submit a charge-sheet against the accused, Asad Ejaz and Asif Mehboob in a snatching case.

According to the FIR (380/07) registered with the police, the accused had snatched Rs290,000 from Shariq Hussein at gunpoint on August 1, 2007.

The magistrate suggested action against the IOs for not appearing in the court.
