Wage board within stipulated time: Chairman

KARACHI- The Chairman of the Seventh Wage Board, Mr, Justice (Retd) Raja Afrasiab Khan, said that he would announce the final award within the stipulated time irrespective of boycott of newspaper owners.

He was responding to the appeal of newspaper employees who appeared as witnesses before the Seventh Wage Board Chairman on the second day of the hearing at Qasr-e-Naz.

Representatives of the newspaper owners did not attend the meeting while a large number of witnesses and newspaper employees were present on the occasion.

The Chairman said that he would announce the award as provided by the Newspaper Employees (Conditions of Service) Act, 1973, and ensure justice to both the newspaper employees as well as owners.

He, however, sought the cooperation of both newspaper employees as well as owners of announcing a just award, pleasing both of them.

The chairman made it clear that he would not announce the award in a hurry. He suggested to the witnesses to submit the documentary evidence along with their written statements to support their point of view regarding cost of living.

The witnesses pointed out that skyrocketing prices had made it difficult for them to meet both ends within the existing salaries and urged a rise of 100 to 150 percent in the salaries. The Board will record statements of witnesses in Hyderabad on Thursday and Friday before leaving for Quetta for the same purpose.
