Wage Award implementation: political parties extend support to journalists

KARACHI- The leaders of various political parties, including ministers and advisers of Sindh government, July 1st, 2003 assured the journalists that they would pass resolutions and raise their voice in the assemblies for the early implementation of the 7th Wage Award for the workers of the newspaper industry.

During a visit to the sit-in camp of the All Pakistan Newspaper Employees Confederation (APNEC) outside the Dawn newspaper office here, the leaders expressed their solidarity with the protesting journalists and workers of the newspaper industry and announced their full support to their just struggle against the non-implementation of 7th wage award.

The camp was set up on the call of the central APNEC and Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ).

Similar camps were also set up at other newspaper centers of the country to protest against the delaying tactics of the newspaper owners to implement the 7th wage award.

Adviser to the Sindh Chief Minister Aftab Ahmad Shaikh and Sindh Minister for Excise and Taxation Rauf Siddiqui, Leader of the Opposition in the Sindh Assembly Nisar Ahmad Khuhro, Pakistan People’s Party leaders Senator Raza Rabbani and ND Khan, Members of the Sindh Assembly, Nasreen Chandio, Shama Mithani, Taj Haider, Naseer Raja, Humaira Alwani, Dr Mehrin Bhutto, Rashid Rabbani, Nasrullah Shajih, Hameed Ullah, Allama Hassan Turabi, Maulana Umer Sadiq, leaders of Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal, Senior Minister of NWFP Siraj-ul-Haq, Senator Professor Ghafoor Ahmed, MNA Maulana Asadullah Bhutto, Amir of Jamat-e-Islami, Karachi, Dr Mairajul Hudda, Senator Tanvir Khalid, Sindh Minister for Population Imtiaz Ahmed Shaikh, Pakistan Muslim League (N) leaders Saleem Zia, Nihal Hashmi, Sardar Abdul Rahim, Perveen Shabbir, Maulana Shah Turab-ul-Haq, Laiq Siddiqui, Maulana Usman Yawar, Rehana Leghari, Mohammad Faiz Billo and hundreds of other political workers, representatives of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and labour leaders visited the camp and registered their impressions about the struggle of the workers of the newspaper industry.

They said that they were with the journalists and workers of the industry and would bring in a resolution in favour of the workers, besides presenting a bill in the provincial as well as National Assembly to link the release of the official advertisements with the enforcement of the wage award.

They also appealed to the newspaper owners to consider their decision to flout the law of the land and keep in mind that the industry which keeps the well-being of its staff in mind, flourishes well.

Such an approach is now the part of the modern business administration approaches, they pointed out.

The visiting leaders were welcomed by the President of the PFUJ Ahfaz-ur-Rahman, Chairman APNEC Abdul Hameed Chapra and office-bearers of the Karachi APNEC and KUJ.
