Violence in Lyari against Benazir’s house arrest

KARACHI (November 15 2007): City remained under the grip of tension as disturbances in Lyari, District South, and adjoining areas continued on Wednesday. The PPP workers took to streets to agitate against the house arrest of their leader Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto in Lahore.

The protesters and the police played hide and seek throughout the day as both chased each other in the narrow lanes of the area to exchange fists, and, if possible, fire.

Intermittent teargas shelling and aerial firing were also witnessed. All commercial and shopping centres remained closed. Traffic was thin in the entire area. At places angry mob burnt tyres and junk to obstruct moving vehicles.

People did not come out of their houses for fear of firing and violence. Attendance in schools was also thin. Small groups of protesters, which marched on the road, raised anti-government slogans. In corner meetings, speakers demanded release of Benazir Bhutto, security for her politicking campaign and fair playing fields for all the political parties opposed to present government.

The uncertain situation in the area did not permit KESC staff to attend power breakdown complaints. Water shortage was also reported from some areas. The PPP workers said that they would continue their anti-government demonstrations as long as party chairperson remains under house arrest. No arrests are reported.
