Violence against women
THIS is apropos of Malik Tariq’s letter ‘Intolerant society’ (July 16).
It is unfortunate that there is no support for victims of rape, nor the state apparatus and the police seem eager to prosecute perpetrators of heinous crimes such as acid-throwing, or those who rob the state of funds.
This could have been used for welfare of the most deprived sections of our society.
Our value system and ethics have eroded, while the sole yardstick for success is the quantum of money accumulated, irrespective of the way in which it was earned.
Society supports feudals involved in crimes against women and the nouveau rich who take pride in breaking laws, etc. Even political parties that lay their claim on power through the power of the ballot never hesitate to intimidate their opponents.

8,000 cases
PAKISTAN is regarded as one of the most dangerous places for women in the world. According to a report by the Aurat Foundation, there were 8,000 cases of violence against women in Pakistan during 2010.
Such violence is also visible in Balochistan. The problem is not just that women are targeted in Pakistan but that no credible action is taken against any such case.
This signals that women can be killed with impunity. I request the government to take immediate notice of the growing incidents of violence against women.
