Urdu Press faces more pressure, says Shami

KARACHI — Veteran columnist Mujeebur Rehman Shami speaking on the second day of Urdu Press moot paid tributes to Nawa-i-Waqt for its bold stance by fearlessly publishing the ads of PML (N) Chief Shahbaz Sahrif over his return issue.

Everybody knows that there was a severe pressure from the government side and the ads were closed but the newspaper promoted the democratic norms, he said.

He said that the Urdu Press was in forefront in struggle for Press freedom and played a key role in creating mass awareness.

He said it is because of the influence that the Urdu Press wields in the masses that it has to face immense pressure from the government and various circles.

Shami noted that Urdu newspapers have progressed a lot and and it is proof that their influence on masses has increased.

He said that the English press of Pakistan has lesser pressure as compared tot he Urdu Press.

Prof Zakaryia Sajid in his concluding remarks emphasized the need of workable and agreed code of professional standards, which must be implemented in letter and spirit.

This, he said would not only improve the quality but will also establish the credibility of the Press.

Provincial Information Secretary Mehtab Akbar Rashidi in her remarks said that the issue of credibility and balance in reporting events is of outmost importance for the Press as the survival of the newspapers depends on these characteristics.

She said this is an of technology and the new and emerging media technologies has changed the very structure of the media profession.

Mazar Abbas said that journalists fight for the democratic rights of the people and always stands for the peoples rights and betterment of the society.
