Up roar mars City Council session

KARACHI: The City Council session became combat zone on Wednesday, when members of opposition and treasury groups exchanged harsh words against each other, which compelled convener Nasreen Jalil to suspend the meeting for fifteen minutes.

The opposition leader Saeed Chani tried to speak on the resolution approved the other day pertaining to the disqualification of those members involved in the political activities, Nasreen Jalil did not allow him to address the meeting.

She told him that opposition members were present in the council when resolution was tabled, which was the time for address. Haq Parast member Asif Siddiqui on that occasion interrupted Saeed Ghani, said that opposition members made the council political ring and did not take interest resolving the civic problems and other city related issues.

He charged that a Haq Parast member of city council Mazahir Ameer when he was coming to attend the city council’s on Wednesday meeting activists of a political party who were creating law and order situation at old Golimar, attacked on his car and shot fired on him but fortunately he survived but his driver was slightly injured.

On that occasion there was an uproar created in the council and majority of the members of the council stood up and made hue and cry against each other.

Opposition members chanted slogans against imposing the emergency while Haq parast member beating their desks to oppose them.

During this outcry Nasreen Jalil continuing the councils proceeding and Dr Nighat Shakeel tabled a resolution that the old building of Sohbraj Maternity Hospital would be newly built. The members approved the resolution with majority. Later convener adjourned the meeting.

CHANI CHARGES ON TREASURY, PROUD WITH PPP’S AFFILIATION

Opposition leader in the city Council Saeed.Ghani, said that council can not itself send the resolution to the election commission to disqualify the representation of any member of the council instead of it is the right of citizens or a voter of the concerned constituency who can challenged the election of the representatives.

Ghani was addressing a press conference at his chamber on Wednesday. He said that the attitude of ruling party members is unbearable as they did not allow the opposition members to discuss on those topics which they did not like. They made the city council a rubber stamp and wanted that opposition did not raise any objection and always obeying them, Ghani said.

He said that it is clear cut spelled out in the SLGO that candidate of local bodies’ election can not use the plate form, ticket, symbol to contest the elections but there was nothing mentioning that a political worker cannot contest the election.

He charged that the Haq Parast members openly violated the rules of SLGO in this regard and their members hoisting party flags of MQM on the garbage lifting vehicles, dumper loaders, using Snorkels in their party functions. He further said that he would not denied that he is the worker of Pakistan People Party (PPP) and proud of his party affiliation.
