Two press workers killed; bandit found dead in parked taxi

KARACHI: Two press workers were shot dead in separate vicinities, two persons including a woman lost their lives in traffic accidents, while the body of a fleeing bandit was recovered from a parked taxi on Saturday, police said.

According to details, armed bandits intercepted two friends, who were on a motorbike at Faqeer Muhammad Durra Khan Road in Kalakot police limits and asked them to hand over their belongings. The bandits snatched Rs3,000 from Muhammad Yousuf and shot at him, while his fellow escaped unhurt. Yousuf was rushed to the Civil Hospital, where he breathed his last. The deceased was a newspaper agent of a local newspaper.

Another press worker, Abdul Hafeez Burfat (26) of another daily was found dead near his home in Chanesar Goth at Mehmood Shah Bukhari Road, Mehmoodabad. His body was shifted to the JPMC, where MLOs told The News that unidentified killers had gunned him down. The Mehmoodabad police registered a case vide FIR No 352/2003 against unknown killers on the complaint of Abdul Hameed, brother of the deceased. The police opined the murder to be the result of personal enmity.

ACCIDENTS: A female passenger of a coach died and five others including the driver suffered serious injuries when the coach went out of control and rammed into a roadside tree at Dr Ziauddin Ahmed Road near Chief Minister House in Artillery Maidan police limits. The injured were rushed to the JPMC, where they were identified as Shamim (30) wife of Zaffar Iqbal Masih, Riaz Masih, Bhola Ram Praim Chand, Pehalwan and driver Jehangir, police added. Shamim, who had suffered serious head injuries, breathed her last before reaching the hospital.

An elderly man was crushed under the wheels of a carelessly driven minibus at Maripur Road in SITE police limits. His body was shifted to the Civil Hospital and placed in Edhi morgue. The police arrested Razi Khan, driver of the carelessly driven vehicle.

Safia (40) wife of Faqeer Muhammad, who was injured on November 15 in Site police limits, when a speeding truck ran over their motorcycle, breathed her last on Saturday.

Faqeer had died on the spot, while Safiya was admitted to a private hospital.

A thirty-year-old woman was crushed to death under the wheels of a moving train near Colony Gate, while she was crossing the railway track. Her body was shifted to JPMC. She remained unidentified till the filing of this report.

BODY FOUND: Police, while patrolling found a taxi parked near Gulberg Chowrangi and a body lying in the back seat of the taxi with a bullet wound in its head. The body was shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. The body remained unidentified till the filling of this report. Earlier, a person, Zaffar Abbas, had reported at Shamim Shaheed police post that some persons had snatched his taxi at gunpoint. The said dacoits reached Noor Islam Bakers and looted cash from there, while an exchange of fire also took place. One accomplice of the bandits received a bullet in his head and was left near Matric Board Office, while the others sped away. Later, Zaffar Abbas identified his taxi that contained the body. Police sources told The News that it might have been possible that the deceased bandit received a bullet in his head, when a fire exchange occurred at Noor Islam Bakers with his accomplices fleeing away after leaving his body in the taxi. However, the police registered a case and further investigations were on their way.

SUCCUMBED: Muhtaj Gul (23), who had suffered serious burn injuries on November 24 succumbed to his injuries at the Civil Hospital on Saturday
