TV journalist abducted, brutally beaten in Karachi

A journalist belonging to a local TV channel in Pakistan’s largest city Karachi was abducted and beaten by four armed law-enforcing personnel on November 20, 2007. The abductors, after subjecting and severely beating, dumped him at the side street and threatened him for the dire consequences if he reported the matter to anybody.

Press reports quoting family member on anonymity said Khurram Hashmi reporter of “Aaj” television channel was covering the arrests and baton charge by police on journalists outside the Karachi Press Club, when a four armed men in car with tinted glasses pounced on him, bundled him into the car and drove him to an unknown location. There he was subjected to brutal interrogation for several hours and was hit on his knees and backbone with clubs. Later the security personnel put him in the car and dumped him on the side of the road. A taxi driver who saw him lying on the ground took the Hashmi home.
