TUJ demands removal of director media cell Fata

Peshawar, August 18 2006 (PPI): Protesting against ban on entrance of media men in Fata the Tribal Union of Journalists on Friday organized a protest demonstration and demanded removal of director FATA media cell, who they alleged was creating rifts in
TUJ members.

Led by TUJ President Silab Mehsud the protesting tribal journalists gathered in front of Peshawar Press Club and chanted slogans against chief media cell Fata Shah Zaman Khan and demanded of the government to allow journalist in Fata for performing their duties. They were holding placards and banners inscribed with various slogans against restrictions on journalists and FATA secretariat.

Addressing the protesting media men, Silab Mehsud accused the director of FATA media cell Shah Zaman Khan of irregularities and said that the FATA secretariat was releasing Rs 0.3 million every month on the name of tribal journalists, but, he added, no one knew where this huge amount went, as journalists did not know about the money.

He said that the government had imposed ban on the entry of journalists into Tribal areas. The grand tribal jirga was going on in South Waziristan, but the media men were not allowed for the coverage of the jirga. He also accused the FATA secretariat of dividing tribal journalists, however, he added, they were united and would foil such efforts.

He also demanded of the government to pay compensation to the heirs of the slain tribal journalist Nasir Afridi, who was killed in Dara Adam Khel.

Later on the protesting journalists dispersed peacefully.
