Torture of journalists, trader: Bilour seeks report from police

PESHAWAR: Taking notice of the incidents of police torture on journalists and a trader, Senior Provincial Minister Bashir Ahmad Bilour has asked the police high-ups to submit him a report in this regard.

Bashir Bilour is the first one who took notice of the incident of torture on a Geo reporter by the Bhanamari police. In a letter, a copy of which was provided to The News, he asked the IGP to conduct an inquiry and take proper action against the cops involved in torture and illegal detention of the reporter.

Recently, three other journalists associated with Khyber TV were also tortured by the deputy superintendent of police and station house officer of Faqirabad. No action has been taken in this incident too.

The senior minister Monday expressed his anger when the city police authorities did not release a member of the Amn Committee and a property dealer in Gulbahar, Mian Naseer Khan, despite his directives.

A press release issued from the Bacha Khan Markaz said that Mian Naseer was tortured by the ASP Gulbahar and was kept in illegal detention for two days.

The traders have been staging protest demonstrations against the police torture for the last eight days. But the provincial government and police high-ups seem reluctant to take action against the ASP Gulbahar as well as SHOs of Faqirabad and Bhanamari for torturing traders and media persons.

It has been for the past many weeks that police have been torturing, arresting and insulting commoners on pretext of action against terrorists and miscreants while their bosses provide them every kind of support and cooperation.
