Tickets for damaging govt property soon

Karachi:The city government intends to, for the first time in the history of Pakistan, start a ticketing system for an offence causing damage to municipal property through community policing.

Official sources, talking to The News, disclosed that tickets had been printed and very soon issuance of tickets will be started empowering personnel under the Sindh Local Government Ordinance (SLGO).

The maximum fine to be imposed is Rs3000 and the minimum, Rs200.

This ticket will be issued on a priority basis to those defaulters who cause damage to municipal property. Sources said in the beginning there would be lot of resistance but this ticketing system will be introduced in the larger interest of the city.

The community police with its full force move around the city and try to become a deterrent to those vendors who have occupied pavements, roads, and cluttered the place with their wares. Such offenders would be penalised.

Sources said these days the community police force which has a strength of only 500 community police force move around the city and force these vendors to move out and clear the pavements.

A retired army officer is these days imparting training to the community police and the city government is seriously thinking of requesting the Pakistan Army to provide training to this force.

Sources said this revenue generated by imposing fines would be utilised to induct more and more volunteers who could become another force for those who occupy pavements and roads and cause damage to municipal property.

A special campaign will also be launched to create awareness among the citizens not to go for civil offence as the city at the moment cannot afford such offences, regardless of whether they are minor or major.
