Three more witnesses examined in Pearl case

HYDERABAD-Three more prosecution witnesses recorded their statements when Anti-Terrorism Court, Hyderabad and Mirpurkhas Divisions, headed by Judge Syed Ali Ashraf Shah on Wednesday resumed the hearing of Daniel Pearl murder case here at Central Prison.

Advocate General Sindh, Raja Qureshi, who is also the Chief Prosecutor of the case, said that PW Arif while recording his statement, admitted that co-accused Suleman Saqib and Fahad Naseem had purchased a camera from his shop and in this respect a receipt was also issued to them.

The witness was then cross-examined by the defence counsel. Another PW Colonel (retd) Usman, Incharge Manager of Mobilink Karachi while recording his statement produced the record of mobile phones, through which the accused and co-accused communicated. Another witness Shaikh Naseem, an Internet Service Provider in his deposition confirmed that e-mail messages were sent through his company.

The AG Sindh informed that the judge reserved the date of cross-examination of both the prosecution witnesses. The AG Sindh also submitted an application before the court pleading to call Anti Terrorism Court (ATC) Judge Arshad Noor Khan as witness of the case as the statement of accused Omer Shaikh was recorded before him. The court allowed the application subject to the permission from Sindh High Court. Meanwhile, the court dismissed the application, filed by the defence counsel under section 295/A and 295/C against AG Sindh.

Also present during the hearing were Abdul Waheed Katpar, Defence Counsel for accused Omer Shaikh and Rai Basheer Ahmed for co-accused Suleman Saqib, Fahad Naseem and Shaikh Muhammed Adil. After the hearing, the defence counsel held two hours long meeting with the accused and co-accused. The case will now come up before the court for further hearing on Thursday.
