The Planning Commission of Pakistan (PCP) has praised the vision and performance of City Nazim, Syed Mustafa Kamal, and offered all possible help to continue the journey of development.

The Commission’s member Infrastructure, Dr Asad Ali Shah, while expressing his views in a meeting held at the office of the city Nazim on Monday said that development works initiated in Karachi were completed rapidly and this too had been in the interest of the whole of Pakistan as this city was like a heart of the country and therefore deserved progress that could be recognised worldwide.

City Government EDOs briefed the Planning Commission about ongoing development schemes and future plans of their respective departments. They also said that the Master Plan for Karachi had already been in force after its approval from the City Council and planning and development works in the city were being carried out in accordance with it.

Coordinator LSU, Roshan Ali Shaikh, briefed the participants about Mega City Projects. He said that work on these projects would be started in April and June with the first installment of $400 million.

Planning Commission member Dr Shah stressed the need of providing residential units to low income groups in Karachi. He further said that in order to make rapid progress the transport and housing sector needs to be focused more and although work has been going on in every sector but the transport sector still needs more work in Karachi.

He also informed the meeting that a meeting of the Planning Commission would be called in Islamabad to invite all those federal bodies who have not yet done their work in the Tameer-e-Karachi Programme.

Kamal said that 125,000 plots had already been allotted during the last one year to people belonging to the low income group. Regarding Solid Waste Management he said that this sector had been privatised and a contract had been awarded to an international firm which would be responsible for lifting garbage from homes and depositing it at landfill sites.

“An investment of $390 million was also involved in this project,” he said, adding that the company had already begun work and was constructing eight garbage transfer stations in different areas of the city. The city Nazim further said that the City Government was completing all projects under the Tameer-e-Karachi Programme by January 31, 2008.
