The News reporter wins UN speech contest

KARACHI, June 04 2006: Sidra Rafique Gooda, a City Reporter with The News, won the first prize in a recently held speech contest in Islamabad. The speech competition was organised by UNESCO in collaboration with the United Nations Information Centre, Islamabad, to commemorate the World Press Freedom Day that was observed worldwide on May 30.

The topic of the speech was “Role of media in poverty eradication”. Five contestants, one each from Sindh, Balochistan, Punjab, the NWFP and Islamabad took part in the competition. Sidra represented Sindh in the national contest. The first prize carried a purse of Rs25,000, a shield and a certificate of excellence.

Tariq Azeem Khan, State Minister for Information and Broadcasting, was the chief guest. Others in attendance were government and UN officials as well as students from different colleges and universities. Sidra is also an MA Final student at the Department of Mass Communication, University of Karachi.
