Telenor gets Telecom Excellence Award

KARACHI, June 04 2006: Telenor Pakistan has won the First Telecom Excellence Award for bringing in Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in telecom, an amount that now stands at a total of approximately $600 million over the last two years, said an official statement on May 03. It said the Minister of State for Information Technology and Telecom, Ishaq Khan Khakwani, was the chief guest at the award ceremony, while the event was presided over by the Pakistan Telecom Authority (PTA) Chairman Major (R) Gen Shahzada Alam Malik.

“It is our great honour to be recognised for contributing to Pakistan’s fast economic growth, considering that FDI is termed a top priority of the current government,” the statement quoted Irfan Wahab Khan, Executive Vice President, Telenor as saying. “FDI brings inter alia efficient management of resources, robust technology, competitiveness and access to global markets – benefits that are made obvious to us by the telecom success story in Pakistan.”

“The telecom sector is contributing in a big way to the total FDI in the country. Telecom’s share has jumped from $6.1 million in 2001-02 to $494.4 million in 2004-05, and according to 2005-06 PTA figures makes up for 32 per cent of the total FDI of the country,” said Khan.
